Give Thanks Day 2: Running water

Give Thanks is a daily series of posts through November that chronicle what I’m thankful for. The format is a big deal on Facebook or something.

In my new apartment, our bathroom is detached from our living space. My roommate and I must grab the bathroom key and trek across the hallway to get there.

It’s annoying.

And there are stains on the hallway carpet.

And the bathroom is always cold.

And we do not have a dishwasher. Or a washer and dryer.

And I have to work two jobs to live here.

And I am living without healthcare and I have to pay $103.60 a month for birth control.

And my computer is crusty.

And…

Stop..

Breathe…

|

|

Feel the shower water wash away everything…

There is no symbol in the key board to make a downward arrow. Only a ^.

Only up.

I have a job. Two jobs!

I have the ability to work.

My body is able to not only walk across the hallway, but to prance if it so desired.

I have a choice in what my life looks like.

I have a computer.

I have a home that is safe.

I have a key.

I have a roommate whom I love.

I have a voice to acknowledge the cruelty in this world, despite my need to see past it, and fight against it.

I’m thankful for my ability to see life this way, without shame or guilt that, initially, I felt lack, need. I know that is not easy. By some, not even encouraged.

Here’s to you, fellow soldiers in the Army of Optimism.
